Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Today in class we discussed Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and identified the 5 needs. We viewed a PowerPoint that I thought was interesting that included a pyramid of the 5 needs. Starting at the bottom with physiological needs. These are primal needs such as, food, shelter, air and sleep. An example of this can be when you're hungry you search for food to meet your need. But, when you are stuffed from eating so much this need is not as important. The next level is safety & security. We identified this as being able to resolve anxiety. If you're anxious it shows lack of certainty, therefore this need is not being met. The third level is loving/belonging. This need is met by feeling like you belong somewhere or intimate relationships. The forth level of the pyramid is esteem. This is involving the need of feeling accepted, confident, and capable of doing something. At the peak of the pyramid is self-actualization. This is the need to make the most of unique abilities and strive to be the best you can be. We then broke the pyramid into 2 parts. The top which includes self-actualization is growth needs, and the bottom four are deficiency needs. Growth needs are self motivating and deficiency needs are not fulfilled, but motivated to fulfill them.
